Lime renders were traditionally applied to give protection to walls built in rubble stone or porous brick, or on external walls in exposed locations facing driving winds acting as a temporary ‘reservoir’ absorbing rainfall then allowing it to evaporate rather than soak into the wall. Country cottages and period houses built of natural random stone would have been lime rendered and they tend to suffer from penetrating damp if the original lime render is replaced by a conventional cement render.
Shipman and Bee has considerable experience of lime mortar rendering having worked on a range of period buildings for English Heritage, the National Trust and an appreciable number of discerning private clients.
